APPRENTICESHIP BENEFITS  (Back to Top)

Introduction to Apprenticeship

Apprenticeships are key to boosting skills and talent in businesses of all sizes, sectors and industries.

Apprenticeships are a great way to transform your business. They provide opportunities to train new employees, or upskill existing staff, in a way that is responsive to the needs of your business.

Apprenticeships are real jobs designed by employers. This ensures the apprentice is learning and being assessed against real-world skills, knowledge and behaviours required for a particular occupation.

You decide which type of apprenticeships are right for your business. There are currently over 650 apprenticeships standards available, with more being released each year, so you can ensure your workforce has the skills required for your business to thrive.

Apprenticeships offer flexible, but structured training that can be delivered to individuals of any age, to a new employee or to current employees looking to retrain. An apprentice will spend at least 20% of their time in off-the-job training to learn the skills they need to support your business, and they must pass their End-Point Assessment before completion. This gives you the confidence that they’ve met the high standards of their industry and are occupationally competent.

Flexible and Accelerated Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are flexible and can be delivered in different ways to best meet the needs of your business. They can be tailored to meet the skills of individuals, including recognising prior experience and qualifications, meaning they may be able to complete their apprenticeship more quickly.

Training patterns can range from one day a week, to blocks of training around project cycles, or at the beginning of the apprenticeship to help your apprentice hit the ground running. For industries where seasonal or project-based work is the norm, Flexi-Job Apprenticeships allow apprentices to work with multiple businesses.

Apprenticeship Funding

You can get help from the government to pay for apprenticeship training, and the amount you get depends on whether you pay the apprenticeship levy or not.

If you have a pay bill of less than £3 million per year, the government will pay between 95% and 100% of the training and assessment costs.

If you have a pay bill over £3 million per year, you can use your levy to pay for your apprenticeship training and assessment.

Your business could also get £1,000 for taking on an apprentice who is either:

  • aged 16 to 18 years old,

  • aged 19 to 25 years old and has an education, health and care (EHC) plan

  • or has been in the care of their local authority.

Additionally, if your apprentices are under 25 years old, you may not have to pay National Insurance contributions.

Employers can also apply for a transfer of funds from another business to cover 100% of the apprentice’s training and assessment costs.

Upskilling Your Workforce

Apprenticeships are designed by employers, so they reflect the relevant knowledge, skills and behaviours that your business needs.

You can use apprenticeship training to upskill current and/or new employees, helping you fill skills gaps in your business, boost employee motivation by investing in their development, and improve retention.

Apprenticeships are ideal for upskilling employees of any age, and at any level. An experienced employee may be keen to learn something new and progress into a different role within your business.

There are apprenticeships from level 2 to level 7 so you’ll be able to find apprenticeships that suit the needs of your business, and any relevant existing skills, experience and qualifications can also be recognised meaning they may be able to complete their apprenticeship more quickly. On completion, apprentices can also progress on to a higher-level apprenticeship to continue developing their skill set - you can work with your training provider to explore this option.

Higher and Degree Apprenticeships

Through higher and degree apprenticeships your business can fill its higher-level skills gaps. By combining work with study, higher and degree apprenticeships may include:

  • a work-based, academic, or combined qualification

  • or a professional qualification relevant to your industry.

Higher apprenticeships go from level 4 to 7 and are equivalent to a foundation degree and above.

Degree apprenticeships are available at levels 6 and 7 and are equivalent to a full bachelor’s and Master’s. They offer apprentices a real alternative to following the traditional route of going to university as a full-time student, at the same time boosting the skills and talent of your workforce.

Your business could benefit from progressing a new or existing employee from other learning routes, such as A Levels, T Levels, Skills Bootcamps or a previous apprenticeship, onto a higher or degree level apprenticeship.

Find the right higher and degree apprenticeship standard for your job role at apprenticeships.gov.uk.

Other Skills Progression

If you're not sure if apprenticeships are the right option for your business right now, there are other alternatives available such as T Levels or Skills Bootcamps.

T Level Industry placements are an ideal solution for entry-level skills and are the equivalent to 3 A levels. Aimed at 16-18 year olds, they provide an alternative to A levels, whilst offering classroom-based learning alongside an industry placement.

By offering T Level industry placements, you can work alongside the next generation of workers entering your industry, perhaps preparing individuals to fill your entry-level positions or apprenticeship vacancies in the process.

Progression from other schemes, such as T Levels, can lead to an Accelerated Apprenticeship, which could offer benefits to both you and the apprentice.

Apprentices who have existing knowledge or skills before starting their apprenticeship can have this recognised as prior learning. This means the apprentice should be able to complete their programme quicker, as prior training doesn’t need to be repeated and therefore can be removed from their current training plan.

This allows employees to complete the scheme in less time and cost to your business.

GETTING STARTED WITH APPRENITCESHIPS  (Back to Top)

Creating an Apprenticeship Service Account

All apprenticeships in England must be managed through The Apprenticeship Service - an online government tool which allows you to set up an account and manage your apprenticeships.

By creating an apprenticeship service account, you'll be able to:

  • easily manage funding, reservations, and training costs

  • check training provider payments and permissions

  • advertise vacancies for free on the 'Find an apprenticeship' service

  • set up and approve apprentices

  • give feedback on apprenticeship training.

You can engage with Training Providers before creating an account to find out more about the process. Training Providers may also be able to manage some Apprenticeship Service tasks on your behalf.

To create an account, you will need an email address, permission to add your PAYE schemes to the account, and permission to accept the employer agreement on behalf of your organisation. You will also need either the Government Gateway login for your organisation, or your accounts office reference number (AORN) and employer PAYE scheme reference number.

Find out more at apprenitceship.gov.uk and create your account today.

Working with Training Providers

Training providers can help employers with as much help and support as you need, such as finding the right training, helping to recruit and interview an apprentice, and preparing your apprentice for the workplace.

To choose a training provider, use the Find apprenticeship training service, which allows you to:

  • choose an apprenticeship training course

  • choose a course at the right level and skills

  • check the availability of training providers at the apprenticeship location

  • view employer reviews

  • and share your interest in an apprenticeship training course with all training providers.

Your training provider doesn’t have to be located near you; many are national and offer training at your workplace and online.

If you can’t find any training providers offering the apprenticeship training you’re interested in, you can now fill out a simple online form to share your interest in a particular course with all providers.

More information on training providers can be found at apprenitceship.gov.uk.
